Camping on the Battenkill
The first campground in this series that we visited was Camping on the Battenkill located in Arlington Vermont, on Historic Route 7A. We arrived early Friday to a sky filled with clouds and the occassional drizzle. Check in was a bit crowded as others were attempting to check in before the threatened rain arrived. The actual registration was done quickly and efficiently.
Our campsite which was located right on the river and located adjacent to the beach, was easy to find using the well defined map given us at check in. The site was well laid out with easy access, and though we were in a tent would have been easy to maneuver in a small trailer. The campground itself is around 100 sites, with an equal mix of hook ups and tent areas. The restrooms were easily accessible within a short of walk, and there were enough of them so you were never very far from one. They were clean and had been in the process of undergoing renovations to make them even nicer.
There was plenty to do, with the Battenkill river right there for swimming and boating and a canoe rental was available just a few miles from the campground. We were told by some of the people there that the fishing was quite good this year, though we didn't have time to find out for ourselves.
Located on historic 7A, there are many attractions for both children and adults, including the Norman Rockwell Museum, the Bennington Museum, Park McCullogh house, and the Bennington Monument. Also in the area many small shops and outlet stores are within a reasonable distance, and good restaurants can be found all along Route 7A and in the town of Bennington just 1/2 hour away.
Overall I would highly recommend Camping on the Battenkill as a fine family campground
