Lone Oaks Campground
Visited 6/13-6/15

We recently visited Lone Oaks campground located in East Canaan CT on Route 44. Lone Oaks is a large facility with approx. 500 wooded and open sites. It is easily accessible from Route 7 or Route 8. Located in the small village of Canaan CT.

We checked in around 5 pm on Friday in a steady drizzling rain. The check in process was fairly quick with everything computerized. The information packet given to us was complete with a detailed map of the campground, as well as a complete list of rules, regulations, services and amenities. The large staff was both friendly and helpful to all visitors.

After reaching our site over rough roads, we found our wooded site to be more open than we would have preferred. The sites were closely spaced with little privacy between us and our neighbors. The layout of the site was not too bad, with easily accessible water and electric. Once we had the trailer set up we began exploring. The restrooms were well laid out and spaced conveniently around the campground, though most were only basic facilities with 3 or 4 set up with showers, but these were not always easy to access. Our nearest shower facility was about a 5 minute walk away, while we had a restroom a mere 50 yards from our site. The camp store was well stocked with all the basic necessities as well as many of the luxuries to make for a complete camping experience. In addition there was also a full service deli/market. There is a large pool and despite the weather many of the children were taking full advantage of it. In addition there is also a pond, well stocked for fishing. The campground provides many structured events for both children and adults. During our time there (Father's Day Weekend) they had games and contests for people of all ages. Located near the main office is the Acorn Lounge. A nightclub for the adults (must be 21 or over to enter) with live entertainment. The nearby areas are beautiful country roads, with many small antique shops to choose from. Also located not far away is the Housatonic river which offers canoeing and fishing.  About 5 miles from the campground is "The Land of Nod Winery" accessible off of Route 44.

It seemed to us that Lone Oaks caters mainly to families and larger groups, and for those campers it is a wonderful facility to visit. If however you prefer the quiet relaxation of rustic camping, I would not recommend this campground.
